On top of Mount Stanley, standing at 5,109m high, there are five other glacial mount Rwenzori peaks that make up Mountain Rwenzori. These include Mount Speke (4,890m), Mount Baker (4,844m), Mount Gessi (4,715m), Mount Luigi da Savoia (4,627m) and Mount Emin (4,791m) on DRC side.
The Rwenzori Mountains are unique among East Africa’s major peaks because they are not volcanic in origin, that’s why they were selected among Ramsar Sites.
Magherita Peak
Margherita Peak at 5,109m on Mt. Stanley in the Rwenzori Mountains is Africa’s third highest mountain that rises to 5,109m between Lake Albert (Lake Mobutu Sese Seko) to the north and Lake Edward to the south on the Congo–Uganda border. It was first climbed in 1906 by an expedition led by Luigi Amedeo Abruzzi and was named after Queen Margherita of Italy.
Mount Stanley
Mount Stanley is the highest mountain of both Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) with an elevation of 5,109m (highest peak) and third highest in Africa after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya. This peak and numerous other neighboring peaks are in a higher altitude enough to upkeep glaciers.
Mount Stanley derives its name from a British journalist and explorer Sir Henry Morton Stanley, who discovered it back in the colonial exploration period in the 1880s.
Mount Speke – One of Mount Rwenzori Peaks
Mount Speke lies in the Ruwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda and is the second highest mountain in this range with an Elevation of 4,890 m (16,040 ft). Prominence 730m (2,400 ft) which mountains lie within an area called the ‘Mountains of the Moon’.
Jointly together with Mount Baker and Mount Stanley, forms a triangle encircling the upper Bujuku Valley. The nearby peak is Mount Stanley, 3.55 kilometers (2.21 mi) to the south-southwest side. These mountains are positioned in an area range. It forms a triangle enclosing the upper Bujuku valley with its nearest peak Mount Stanley.
Mount Baker
It’s a mountain found in the ranges of Rwenzori in Uganda near the border of DR. Congo and in its local name called mountain Kiyanja by the Bakonjo, the tribe that lives around the Rwenzori ranges. Together with Mount Stanley and Mount Speke, it forms a triangle enclosing the upper Bujuku Valley. It is 2.8 kilometres from the Ugandan border with the DR. Congo. Locally known as Kiyanja, the mountain is at a height of 4,844 metres (15,892 feet) making it the sixth highest mountain on the African continent.
Mount Gessi – Among Mount Rwenzori Peaks
Mount Gessi is among the six mountains that make up the Rwenzori ranges. Like Mount Emin, it is positioned north of the triangle shaped by Mounts Stanley, Baker and Speke. Mount Gessi is at an altitude of 15,018 feet (4,578 metres) and it ranks the 5th among the tallest mountains in Uganda.
Mount Luigi Di Savora
Mount Luigi di Savoia is a mountain peak in Uganda near Margherita in the Rwenzori Mountain Ranges at a height of 14,885 feet (4,537 metres) about sea level. Mount Luigi ranks 6th as the highest mountain in Uganda.
